Welcome to Trail Running Scotland
Welcome to Trail Running Scotland we are a new and exciting company based in Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland. I have started Trail Running Scotland with two aims really. Firstly to provide skills training, such as navigation and off road running technique, to try to get more people out having off road adventures. Secondly to get out and enjoy the amazing, world-class trail running that we have in Scotland on a range of guided, supported trips.
We will be offering training, guiding and inspiration in all things trail running related.
Our courses are designed to increase your confidence and enjoyment of off-road running through improved running technique, navigation skills to help you to explore and tips for dealing with rough terrain with a grin!
We will also be launching soon our selection of guided trips, where we will tour Scotland enjoying the very best of it's trails.
Other courses coming soon will be preparation for Mountain Marathon and Adventure racing as well as Skyrunning introduction and reconnaissance.
Trail Running Scotland is lead by Ian Stewart, a Mountaineering Instructor with ten years experience of delivering courses at the highest level, increasingly over the last few years my running has taken over from my other sports. I ran a Bob Graham Round for my stag do, I compete at an elite level in Mountain Marathon events and finished 16th in the Celtman Extreme Triathlon.
You will find a few dates for our courses on the website, and some courses with no set dates. If you can’t find the information that you are looking for, please just get in touch for more information.

Latest News
I started Trail Running Scotland in 2017 as a way of bringing together my experience as an instructor in the mountains with my love of trail and mountain running.
I’ve been blown away by how the business has grown beyond my expectations and have massively enjoyed all the days out on the trails with you all.
Occasionally in life, opportunities present themselves that are too good to miss, this week has seen a big change for us as I start work at Ourea Events as their new Course Manager, based in Kendal. Ourea deliver some iconic races in the UK, including the Dragon’s Back Race and the Cape Wrath Ultra which I have enjoyed as a participant and now look forward to being involved in from the other side.
So what about Trail Running Scotland?
Everything we have in the calendar for 2025 will go ahead as planned.
For 2026 our excellent guide team will be available for a whole range of bespoke guiding and instructional options. We will continue as we have for the last few years to provide high quality coaching in navigation and downhill running technique as well as designing custom guided running adventures, from one to multi-day packages.
On the 29th May I completed the Martin Moran Round in Torridon, in a time of 21 hours and 45 minutes, becoming the first person to repeat the round since it was created in 2022.
Vision
At Trail Running Scotland we are working hard towards the vision of a vibrant community of runners, connected through shared values of health, wellbeing, personal performance and an appreciation of the wild places we choose to play in. We aim to do this by providing the highest quality of skills training and inspirational experiences.
Values
We believe:
- The environment in which we run is fundamental to our enjoyment of the sport.
- Connection with our landscape and natural history fosters a greater appreciation of our environment and therefore our impact upon it.
- Every runner has the potential to develop given the right training and motivation.
- Every runner can find their own personal version of high performance.
- Every running experience should be fun.
- The trail running community should be welcoming, inclusive and diverse.
We are proud to support The Green Runners
